Attorney general identifies man fatally shot by Jersey City police

It happened in the area of John F. Kennedy Boulevard near the intersection of Clinton Avenue.

The New Jersey Attorney General's Office identified the man who was fatally shot by Jersey City police on Sept. 5.

Officials say Steven Sanchez opened fire on police cars in the area of John F. Kennedy Boulevard near the intersection of Clinton Avenue. He was shot during an exchange with police Sgt. Ricardo Reyes.

Authorities later determined Sanchez's weapon was an air pistol. He was taken to Jersey City Medical Center, where he later died at approximately at 8:45 p.m.

Sgt. Reyes sustained an injured that was not considered life-threatening.
