Crews are digging into the ground along Smith Street in Woodbridge to investigate the quality of the soil underground.
The road linking Woodbridge to Perth Amboy had to be closed a week ago after the pavement started splitting.
The dirt is being pulled up from two locations - one at Florida Grove Road and the other at the corner of Judy Drive, both of which are residential neighborhoods.
There is one very visible, large and jagged crack along Smith Street, along with several more severe cracks. This includes an area where the pavement has pulled away from the curb and storm drain.
Local officials have suggested that the road was destroyed by construction and digging nearby on what will be a massive warehouse called the Raritan River Logistics Center.
Brookfield Properties is the developer of that site.
“Working closely with third-party engineers and local authorities, we have instituted measures to address the impacts on Smith Street and are investigating what transpired,” a spokesperson for the developer wrote in a statement.
Meanwhile, homeowners are waiting for a response from Middlesex County, which is responsible for repairing the road. Property owners are concerned that the road is still moving and could impact their foundations.
