A Mays Landing man has pleaded guilty to aggravated assault in two separate domestic violence cases, authorities said.
Jerry Vargas-Perez, 27, pleaded guilty Friday to two counts of aggravated assault on a domestic violence victim in Atlantic County Superior Court.
Under the plea agreement, Vargas-Perez faces five years in New Jersey State Prison and must serve 85% of the sentence before becoming eligible for parole under the No Early Release Act. Sentencing is scheduled for June 5, officials said.
According to authorities, officers with the Atlantic City Police Department responded on Nov. 26, 2022, to the area of Winchester and North Providence avenues for a reported domestic assault.
An investigation found that Vargas-Perez strangled the victim until she nearly lost consciousness. He was arrested at the scene, but a state motion to detain him was denied by the court.
On July 6, 2024, officers with the Hamilton Township Police Department responded to Kenwood Court in Hamilton Township for another reported domestic assault involving a different victim.
Investigators determined Vargas-Perez again strangled the victim until she could not breathe. He was arrested at the scene, and the court granted the state’s motion to detain him, authorities said.
