Atlantic City is feeling lighter in the wallet after revenues and profits dipped during the first quarter.
State casino regulators say gaming revenue dropped 2.1 percent in the first quarter compared to last year. Some say the low profits can be linked to new slots parlors in New York and Pennsylvania. With the gas prices so high, some gamblers feel the other options are cheaper and closer to home.
Non-gamblers could still feel the impact of the low Atlantic City revenues. State officials say an 8 percent tax on gaming revenue helps fund programs that assist the elderly and disabled in New Jersey.
Despite the low first quarter, the vice chairman of the Casino Control Commission feels confident things will pick up over the summer. Some visitors say they will probably be back to AC, because there is more to do than just gambling.
