First responders in Easton could have a new home soon.
On Tuesday night, Board of Finance members voted whether or not to approve funding for the proposed renovation of the Easton EMS building on Sport Hill Road.
If approved, the final hurdle would be a townwide vote in February.
“After 20 years...we are literally at the one-yard line," says Chief Jon Arnold, of Easton EMS.
The infrastructure of the 100-year-old repurposed firehouse is crumbling, and it's negatively affecting first responders' ability to do their jobs, says Chief Arnold.
"Failing septic systems," Chief Arnold says. "Some holes in the ceiling in our training room upstairs and some drains that have collapsed in the garage."
The proposed renovation calls for updating a majority of the 6,000-square-foot space, replacing the 70-year-old septic system and adding bedrooms, parking and more storage.
"There's literally pieces falling out of the ceiling," First Selectman Dr. David Bindelglass says.
Through federal, state and some local funding by Easton EMS, the town says work could start as early as this spring.
“If you drive around and look at other people’s brand-new facilities," First Selectman Dr. Bindelglass says. "You’re invariably looking at $6 to $8 million facilities, and we’re going to do this for less than $2 million out of our own pockets, and that’s pretty good."
Easton EMS says it will move to a temporary facility if and when renovation plans are finalized.
