Thousands of people visited the Newark Museum of Art on Martin Luther King Jr. Day for a full afternoon of programming.

This year, the event is about being stronger together and brought all generations through the doors. It's special to the community - especially in Newark.

"Being that Newark is predominantly a Black and brown city, I think it's important that we celebrate those civil rights leaders, those leaders that have helped paint the way forward," said Darryl Dwayne Walker, manager of Community Engagement.

The day was action-packed, with free eye exams, crafts for kids, performances and community partner engagement.

"Amazing performers, we have an African drumming performance that's taking place today, as well as amazing vocal performances happening as well," said Walker.

The space was filled with sound.

"The idea of immersive space has always been something we do as a museum," said Walker.

The museum wants people to take the lessons of the event with them. It is accessible and is a space for everyone. The museum serves the area as a resource year-round.

Each month, it hosts free community days. Find out more HERE.
