A former city councilman from Asbury Park who was screamed at by Gov. Chris Christie in a viral video is running for the New Jersey General Assembly.
Jim Keady made headlines last year when the governor told him to "sit down and shut up" during a ceremony for the two-year anniversary of Superstorm Sandy. Keady was at the ceremony to object to the speed and transparency of the Sandy recovery, an effort he says has failed thousands of homeowners still affected by the storm. It's a fight he says the district's current representatives in the Assembly aren't willing to wage.
Keady hopes that he can change that by running for the Assembly himself.
"I have not heard a word from these guys demanding accountability, demanding transparency and doing what's right for these Sandy families," he says.
The Democratic candidate will challenge Republicans Sean Kean and Dave Rible, two lawmakers with almost 20 years of experience in the Legislature between them.
Kean tells News 12 New Jersey that Keady is only running for the facetime and doesn't get the issues that really matter to the people of District 30. Kean says that there is more to the district than the Shore, specifically taxes and education.
Keady says he just wants to represent the people in his district.
"Our teachers. Our cops. Our firemen. They need a voice in Trenton," he says. "Working-class families, middle-class families. I want to be that voice."
New Jersey's primary elections are scheduled for June 2. The General Election is scheduled for Nov. 3.
