Hundreds of Asbury Park residents packed a town meeting Wednesday to voice frustration and concern over plans for a private beach club that could be coming to town.

A town council meeting was held at Asbury Park High School due to the number of people who attended the meeting.

The beach club is being developed by the company iStar. Representatives explained their plans to town residents and borough council.

Asbury Park native Arthur Gregory Schlossbach says that he is in support of the club.

“If you’re going to live in a town that’s a beachfront town, you’ve got to get used to people being here and wanting to go on the beach,” he says.

But those who oppose the plan say that they are concerned about the environmental impact and beach access. iStar says the beach will remain public and a new access ramp will be added. But the club, which features a large pool and sunbathing deck, will be members only.

"I have some questions about whether it will really divide Asbury Park more between, the private-exclusive and the public access,” says Patricia Jelly.

"A private pool is still concerning for a lot of people because they think it's going to change the entire dynamic of our city, which is very possible,” says Jess Alaimo.

Alaimo says that a possible solution to bridge the divide would be affordable day passes to the club.

“I don't know if that is something that we will be able to see because they own it, it's a private thing, but yeah that would be ideal,” she says.

Representatives from iStar did not wish to be interviewed on camera for this story, but said in a statement, "The waterfront will reflect the ideals of the community and the eclectic nature of the city." The statement went on to say that everyone is welcome.

The company has not yet decided on how much membership for the club would cost.

The Asbury Park Council will vote on this at a later date.
