An arrest has been made in a weekend shooting that left a high school basketball star dead and injured two others.
Gregory Oliver, 20, has been charged in the fatal shooting of Armoni Sexton, a freshman at the Paterson Charter School for Science and Technology. Oliver has also been charged in connection with the shooting of the two other victims.
Sexton was a top scorer and rebounder on the varsity basketball team. Police say the shooting happened at 8:30 p.m. Saturday in the area of Rosa Parks Boulevard and Godwin Avenue. The victims were standing near a liquor store when a burst of gunfire came from a vehicle that quickly fled the scene.
Grief counselors were at the school today for mourning students. Sexton's coaches, teammates and even players for rival schools expressed their sympathy and mourn the loss of the sports star.
Investigators say Sexton was not the intended target of the shooting, but a bystander. Officials believe the shooting was in retaliation for a previous shooting in the city.
