It's only week two of training camp for the New York Giants, but the team is already suffering some setbacks on defense -- announcing their 2020 second round draft pick, safety Xavier Mckinney has fractured his foot and linebacker David Mayo has a torn meniscus in his knee. Both will undergo surgery this week.
“Any injury to our roster is a hit to us because we care about every player on our roster, but it's our responsibility to have everyone developed and make sure the next man is ready to go,” says Head Coach Joe Judge.
While they may not be season ending injuries, Judge says doctors will handle the timetable for their return and players say, Mckinney's loss will be felt.
“Yea, I mean, I think he was definitely a big part of the defense and we've all kind of seen him dealing with the injury and it's going to be hard for him I'm sure,” says defensive lineman Leonard Williams.
The team held practice inside an empty MetLife Stadium Wednesday, allowing players and coaches to figure out how to communicate plays without crowd noise.
“I think that's something we're going to have to adjust to, the whole league is going to have to adjust to, as far as maybe doing more hand signals or just doing whatever you can in the huddle beforehand to communicate it so you don't give anything away,” says linebacker Kyler Fackrell.
The first Blue and White scrimmage is scheduled for Friday at 7:15 p.m. at MetLife Stadium.
