New Jersey families are being hit hard financially due to economic impacts from the COVID-19 pandemic, inflation and higher gas prices. Those who could
use a little help are getting it, all thanks to an organization in Newark.
Amerigroup New Jersey organizers gave out hundreds of
bags full of fresh fruits and vegetables to help those in need.
Organizers unloaded a truckload full of food in Newark for
families who are having a tough time filling the refrigerator and stocking the
pantry.
"If you are worried about where you are going to find food to put on the
table, you're not going to take care of your health,” says Anya Nawrocky, with
Amerigroup New Jersey. “That's the most primary thing you have to take care of
first."
Organizers say as the pandemic has gone on, the food insecurity problem in
Newark has increased because many parents lost their jobs during the pandemic.
"Medicaid enrollment is at an all-time high here in New Jersey, I think
across the country, frankly,” says Nawrocky. “So, people are concerned about
meeting those needs."
The group also provides free health services as well.
