The alleged bank bandit known as the ?Mad Hatter? admitted in federal court Tuesday that he did, in fact, rob banks.
James Madison was charged with robbing six banks, but told a federal judge in Newark that he robbed 18 and attempted to rob another. Madison was known for wearing a different hat in each robbery. Police said he would always hand the teller a note demanding money.
Madison?s guilty plea comes a few weeks after he backed out of a plea agreement.
Sentencing is scheduled for December. Madison, who has already served prison time for murder, will likely be sentenced to 10-12 years behind bars.
