A liquor licensing law that lowers costs for some businesses but not others in Hackensack is raising concerns among business owners on Main Street.
They're concerned efforts could dilute the value of current licenses.
The new rule allows for lower priced liquor permits in the downtown redevelopment area.
They would cost $25,000 for the first year and $15,000 for each year after that.
In contrast, Ben Rivero, the owner of Casual Habana Cafe, says he currently holds two liquor licenses valued at a combined $600,000.
"I think that it's generally a good idea," Rivero says. "I just think that careful consideration has to be taken to the people who hold the existing licenses."
So far, 37 liquor licenses have been issued throughout the city.
