If you are getting ready to travel on an airplane, get ready to pay more to park at area airports, including Newark Liberty International Airport.
The hike goes into effect Thursday and could cost travelers anywhere from $5 to $20 more. The increase is part of the Port Authority's plan to help reduce the number of cars filling up parking lots.
Port Authority officials say the increase comes during unprecedented summer air travel demand and more people driving their own cars to the airport.
Central Terminal parking will be $5 more if you drive up and don't pre-book, no changes to the new Terminal A garage, daily parking will have a $9 increase for pre-book and $20 more if you drive up, and the Economy lot will go up $4 for pre-book and $6 more if you drive up.
Parking rates are also increasing at JFK and LaGuardia airports.
The Port Authority says to take the pressure off the parking capacity use other ways to get to the airport like public transit, taxis and ride-share services.
Officials say rates will be reassessed after the peak summer travel.
