AG Platkin goes to court to defend New Jersey’s ban on assault weapons
A ruling on the law has the potential to also overturn a statewide ban on extended magazines and restrictions on concealed carry.

New Jersey Attorney General Matt Platkin says he is defending some of that state’s firearm restrictions.
Platkin was at the Third Circuit Appeals Court in Philadelphia to defend New Jersey’s laws restricting assault weapons.

A ruling on the law has the potential to also overturn a statewide ban on extended magazines and restrictions on concealed carry.
The attorney general says he is fighting for common-sense gun safety laws to help keep gun violence down in the state.
“The laws that we're talking about in this case, work…Let’s be clear about what we are talking about, whether or not state legislatures have the authority to say, under the Second Amendment, that you cannot possess a weapon of war,” Platkin said.
The lawsuit was filed by the New Jersey Rifle and Pistol Club. The court heard arguments last summer.
A mixed ruling came back. It was determined that the state’s ban on assault weapons was unconstitutional.
