For 150 families, drawing a matching lottery number would mean acceptance into a free public preschool program. For 217 other families, lottery results would mean sending a child to private preschool or trying again next year.

This was the second drawing held, after the one held last month left out the names of more than 30 children. The superintendent ordered a do-over, saying that this was the only way to make sure everyone had an equal chance.

The new program will be funded through the State Department of Education's Preschool Education Expansion Aid initiative. Brick will receive one of the largest annual grants in the state -- $690,965 per  year -- to staff preschool classes to be held at Warren Wolf Elementary School this fall.

Current students at the elementary school will be moved to other elementary schools across the district.
