The deportation of two Indonesian immigrants seeking sanctuary in New Jersey has been temporarily halted following a lawsuit filed by the ACLU.
Harry Pongemanan and Arthur Jemmy have been living at the Reformed Church of Highland Park after they were targeted for deportation by the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency.
The men are among a group of Indonesian Christians who fled to the United States in the 1990s to escape religious persecution. The men were required to frequently check in with New Jersey officials in order to say in the country.
But they were targeted for deportation when the Trump administration took office. Several of the immigrants have already been detained and deported by ICE.
The lawsuit was filed Friday, and a federal district court judge granted a temporary restraining order halting the deportations. The ruling comes a day after a federal judge ruled in favor of Indonesian immigrants in a similar case in Massachusetts.
