Massive layoffs are expected as bankrupt car manufacturer Chrysler prepares to eliminate nearly 800 dealerships across the country.
The company says the move is part of an effort to consolidate its business. Approximately 30 New Jersey dealerships are among the closures. Robert and Rick Engel co-own dealerships in Tenafly and Wyckoff that are getting the ax. They say both are profitable, and Robert calls the decision to close "a tactical mistake."
Chrysler informed bankruptcy courts of the eliminations as proof of the company's restructuring. Dealerships being closed have the right to appeal the decision, but must take up the appeal through bankruptcy court.
