Four New Jersey cities will soon have a new tool to offer treatment for IV drug addicts.
Paterson, Camden, Atlantic City and Trenton will have mobile units that can hand out medication to treat drug users. The goal of the vans is to reach out to people who don?t know where to turn.
Trenton already has the New Horizons Treatment Center, which treats about 800 patients addicted to IV drugs. Some outreach workers at the center also go into the community to find more users and bring them to get help. They hand out syringe cleaning kits and information about the center.
The mobile units will be run by an organization from Philadelphia. New Horizons? director says he is upset his organization wasn?t given the contract to operate Trenton?s unit. However, he says he is glad the city will now have an extra tool to help drug addicts.
Paterson, Camden and Atlantic City will also be part of the pilot needle exchange program.
