A community is outraged after an unconscious woman was sexually assaulted in an alleyway.
Authorities say a 29-year-old West New York woman waiting for a bus on Fairfield Avenue passed out. According to police, two men saw her fall and dragged her into an alley. Investigators say one of the men then sexually assaulted her while the other stood guard.
An off-duty corrections officer driving by the alley saw the alleged incident and flagged down a police officer.
Now, 25-year-old Martin Cana-Chocoj, who allegedly assaulted the woman, and 19-year-old Sergio Roman-Estrada, who allegedly stood guard, have been charged with aggravated assault and sexual assault. Felix Chocoj-Ortiz, 25, was also charged with hindering the investigation for allegedly lying about his cousin Ramon?s whereabouts.
ICE was notified after the men were arrested. The suspects, all illegal immigrants, also face deportation or a deportation hearing.
Authorities say the victim is recovering from a fractured skull at Columbia Presbyterian in New York. They say she doesn?t remember much from the attack. Police are investigating why the woman passed out.
