A 23-year-old Mays Landing woman was killed in a crash early Sunday morning in Hamilton Township, according to police.

Officials said the crash happened around 6:18 a.m. near Route 40 and Strand Avenue.

Authorities said Giana Fortson, 23, was driving a 2008 Toyota Scion westbound on Route 40 when she lost control and rear-ended a 2025 Nissan Versa driven by Ashlie Guevara Angel, 20, of Pleasantville.

After the collision, Fortson's vehicle went off the roadway and struck a tree. The Nissan also went off the roadway and came to rest in a residential yard on the opposite side of Route 40.

Fortson died at the scene. Police said she was the sole occupant of the vehicle and was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash. No other injuries were reported.

Route 40 was closed for about four hours while authorities investigated the crash.
