A family of four is safe after their boat ran aground in the mouth of the Fire Island Inlet late Saturday night.
Suffolk County police say a 30-year-old husband and wife were aboard a 25-foot Parker boat with their 2-year-old son and the child's 62-year-old grandfather when the vessel became stranded due to low tide.
The mother called 911 at about 11:30 p.m. to report that they had run aground.
Police say responding officers were unable to get within a half mile of the boat, so a police marine hovercraft was used.

Officers used the hovercraft to reach the family and bring them back to safety at about 2 a.m.
They were transported to the New York State Boat Basin, where the 2-year-old was later taken to Good Samaritan University Hospital for treatment of minor injuries.
Police said no other injuries were reported.
