The Oyster Jamboree has returned to Suffolk County for the second year in a row.

This time, it’s in Port Jefferson.

At least 10 oyster farms from across Suffolk County are represented at the event, featuring more than 100,000 oysters, most of which are expected to be consumed before the night is over.

County officials say oyster growers are essential to the local economy. Farmers say it’s a delicious treat, and a very healthy snack as well.

“It's such a good thing for us to be eating,” said oyster farmer Mike Martinsen, of Montauk Pearl Oysters. “And it's right here doing great services for our estuary, providing great food for our neighbors and our communities.”

“We have some of the best oysters in the world right here on Long Island and nobody knows it,” said Eric Coepple, with the Long Island Oyster Growers Association. “So it's really important to raise awareness locally.”

The event is also part of the county’s Suffolk250 celebration. They also had Revolutionary War reenactors, historic boat replicas, and an airshow.
