Residents in Ewing and Lawrence townships are being told to boil their water as a precaution following two water main breaks in Mercer County.

The boil water advisory affects parts of Ewing and Lawrence townships in the area of North Olden Avenue, Glen Mawr Drive, Glen Clair Drive, Central Avenue, Green Lane, Ewingville Road, Eggert Crossing Road, Lawrenceville Road, Fairfield Avenue, Princeton Avenue, Calhoun Street, Pennington Avenue and Parkway Avenue.

“The businesses between Parkside Avenue and Pennington Road will be without water until at least tomorrow morning, and this area of Olden Avenue is currently closed,” Ewing Township posted on social media Tuesday.

According to Trenton Water Works, a temporary loss of water pressure “can increase the risk that contaminants may enter the water distribution system.” TWW officials say they have not yet identified any impact on water quality, so the boil water advisory is only precautionary.

While the advisory is in place, water customers in the affected areas should bring tap water to a rolling boil for one minute and allow it to cool before using it, or use bottled water. The utility company said boiled or bottled water should be used for food and drink preparation, washing produce, brushing teeth, making ice and treating minor injuries.

“Home water filtration devices should not be used as a substitute for boiling water because most household filters do not provide adequate protection against microorganisms,” Trenton Water Works said.

Water quality samples are being collected and tested for the affected area. Repairs are expected to continue today on the roadways impacted by the water main breaks.
