The Hawthorne Fire Department responded to a house fire with a resident trapped inside at 3:36 a.m. Friday.
Upon arrival, firefighters saw the residents on the first roof of the two and a half story home.
A ladder provided by a neighbor was used to safely assist the residents off the roof with the guidance of the Hawthorne police.
Hawthorne firefighters and the North Haledon Fire Department were able to knock down the fire within twenty minutes. They had the fire fully under control within thirty minutes.
Fire officials evacuated the four residents and rescued one cat from the home.
Hawthorne Fire Chief Joseph Speranza says the home is extensively damaged and uninhabitable.
