Emergency crews responded to a fire at a mixed-use building in Montclair on Monday morning. Headquarters 17 of the Bell and Siren Club said on social media that it responded around 7:30 a.m. to provide support and rehab operations at the second-alarm fire at 629 Valley Road.
The first floor of the building houses stores, with apartments above. Firefighters helped one trapped resident evacuate the building, according to the Montclair Fire Department.
Other residents were checked for smoke inhalation at the scene, and no injuries or hospitalizations were reported. No firefighters were injured during the incident.
"The Police Department received a burglar alarm for the building; when they got here, they noticed there was smoke in the building," Deputy Fire Chief Michael Lizza said. "The fire department was dispatched, we found a fire in the storefront on the first floor; all residents on the second and third floor were safely evacuated by the fire department."
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
