Several Newtown schools delayed dismissals while police searched for 2 who fled from I-84 crash

Newtown Middle School was briefly placed in a Safe School Mode Wednesday while police searched for two people involved in a crash on I-84, police and the superintendent say.
Superintendent Anne Uberti explained that Safe School Mode means students were kept inside out of an abundance of caution.

Newtown police conducted a canine search in the area of Church Hill Road. This led to a perimeter being created around the area, which included The Hawley School, St. Rose School and Newtown Middle School.
Police say dismissal at the schools were delayed while the search was taking place. Schools were dismissed after the canine track ended. Uberti says the Safe School Mode has also been lifted. Officers were at each school to help with dismissal.
Police say one person was located and arrested on School House Hill Road, while the second person has not been found.
State police are handling the criminal investigation into this incident.
