Strong overnight winds caused damage across New Jersey – downing trees and power lines, including a massive tree that fell onto a home in Springfield.

The tree came down sometime around 8:30 p.m. on Monday night as wind gusts reached up to 50 mph, uprooting a large, seemingly decades-old tree that crashed through the roof of their recently purchased home, the homeowner, Kerenn Miseo told News 12.

“My wife, my two dogs, and I were in our bedroom in the back, and all of a sudden our lights went out at first, and then it sounded like an earthquake. The house shook,” said Miseo.

Miseo said she first realized what actually happened and the extent of the damage after receiving a call from a neighbor.

“We opened the door and it was like apocalyptic…When you walk out there and it’s the debris, and the whole roof had kind of caved in,” she said.

The collapse knocked out power to the surrounding neighborhood for several hours overnight. With crews working to clear the roadway and return power. Neighbors described returning home to a shocking scene.

“We came home to this. We weren’t home, and we came home to this. It was a sight,” said next door neighbor Matt Klenke.

Crews returned to the scene Tuesday morning with heavy machinery, including woodchippers, chainsaws and a crane, to remove the tree.

Miseo said it was a miracle that her entire family, including their pets, were in one area of the house away from where the tree came down. But still, the family is now facing uncertainty.

“In shock, we don’t know what’s going to happen. We need to find temporary housing, somewhere our dogs can go with us, a little stress about insurance,” Miseo said. “And now that I see it, I mean, it’s huge. It’s terrifying, right?”
