Rep. Frank Pallone is calling on airlines to release information about their use of so-called “surveillance pricing,” a practice in which companies may use data about consumers to tailor prices or offers.
The New Jersey congressman launched a broader inquiry into the issue in May, sending letters to major retailers including Amazon, Costco and Target.
Now, Pallone says the practice could be even more concerning in the airline industry, where ticket prices can already fluctuate dramatically.
This push seeks more transparency about what data airlines collect, how that information is used and whether a customer’s personal profile could influence the price they are shown.
This all comes as scrutiny grows over the use of personal data in online pricing.
