Passerby spots smoke, helping lead to rescue at Linden house fire

A man and a child were taken to the hospital after a fire broke out at a two-family home in Linden on Wednesday morning.
Police and firefighters responded to the home on West 18th Street around 9 a.m. after a passerby reported seeing smoke coming from the building.
Linden Fire Chief William Hasko said there was an initial report of people trapped on the second floor.
"There was report of people trapped on the second floor. Two people had already self-rescued themselves, and the one resident didn't want to come down the steps so police and our deputy chief assisted her down and removed her from the building safely," Hasko said.
Officials say a man and a child were taken to the hospital after inhaling too much smoke.
All three residents are expected to be OK.
The home suffered significant damage, leaving the residents without a place to live.
The cause of the fire has not been released.
