The holiday travel season is here.

People have already started taking advantage of their time off with their getaways at Newark Liberty International Airport.

The Terwillegar family flew into Newark from Iowa, but they aren’t staying long. They are headed off for a seven day cruise to the Bahamas for Thanksgiving.

“This is a Christmas present from last year, so we’re going Thanksgiving this year,” said Shawn Terwillegar, who was with his parents and children.

They’re among the six million people across the U.S. who will be heading to an airport and flying out of town over the upcoming holiday, which according to AAA, is about a 2% boost from 2024.

If you are flying away for the holiday, remember to take your REAL ID or a valid passport to the airport.

If you don’t have one, you could be charged $18 by TSA to get through the checkpoint and over to your gate.

Passengers arriving at the airport on Friday that their flights are on time, which is a relief to those who are thankful that the government shutdown is over, alleviating any anxiety about possibly, delayed or canceled flights.

Husband and wife Rohit and Pratima Mathur, who flew in from Houston, were extremely relieved the shutdown is over, as they’ve got a wedding this weekend and plans for Thanksgiving dinner in New York City.

“Yes until we heard, 'OK, the shutdown is over,' we were actually planning on even driving from Houston,” said Rohit Mathur.

However, with the air traffic control tower fully staffed and flights no longer reduced, that 23 hour drive wasn’t necessary.
