A bagel shop owner had his day in court on Tuesday as he fights against the West Orange Township.

The trial is between the township and Bagels By Jarrett concerning window coverings at the curbside-only bagel restaurant. The owner is facing thousands of dollars in fines for violating a city ordinance.

The owner’s attorney argued that the West Orange Department of Zoning is selectively enforcing the law and is targeting Bagels By Jarrett specifically. The attorney says this issue has been ongoing for several months.

West Orange’s mayor did try to step in and work out a compromise, but neither side could agree.

The trial will resume on Thursday.
