Gov. Mikie Sherrill visited Cherry Hill High School East on Thursday to hear directly from students about the state’s new bell-to-bell cellphone restrictions.
School officials say the policy is already making a difference, reporting fewer distractions, greater student engagement and more face-to-face conversations among students.
“These smartphones are hijacking our kids’ childhoods,” Sherrill said, adding that apps are designed to capture students’ attention and keep them scrolling.
She said grades can suffer, anxiety can increase, and students may sacrifice sleep or tune out in class to stay online.
Every public school district in New Jersey is required to have rules restricting cellphone use during the school day
