2 officials plead not guilty to corruption charges

(AP) - Two public officials arrested in thissummer's big corruption bust in New Jersey have pleaded not guilty. Leona Beldini and Edward Cheatam made their pleas in federalcourt in Newark on Tuesday.

(AP) - Two public officials arrested in thissummer's big corruption bust in New Jersey have pleaded not guilty.
Leona Beldini and Edward Cheatam made their pleas in federalcourt in Newark on Tuesday.
The 74-year-old Beldini is Jersey City's deputy mayor. Cheatam,who is 61, is a former city housing commissioner.
Both are charged with using their official positions to conspireto extort money from an undercover government witness posing as adeveloper looking to gain approvals for building projects.
They were among 44 people arrested in July and were the first tobe indicted in the largest single corruption sting in New Jersey'shistory.
U.S. District Judge Jose Linares set a trial date of Oct. 26.
