The Yonkers community is stepping up to help residents in need who were impacted by a large Friday night fire on School Street.
The Community Closet at Yonkers PAL (Police Athletic League) is providing clothing and essential items to families impacted by the fire that spread to several buildings and displaced dozens.
The PAL was open on Monday for those families to stop by. Its services are also available other days of the week.
"We have clothes for all ages, and now we're going to pull out a lot of toys so the kids can take some toys home. We understand they also lost all of their Christmas gifts. We are here today to support those families," said Marisol Mancebo, executive director of the Yonkers PAL.
Families impacted by the fire are encouraged to contact the Yonkers PAL at 914-377-7381. Mancebo said they can deliver items if transportation is an issue.
Donations are also being accepted at Yonkers PAL at 127 North Broadway.
"This is the good thing about Yonkers. When we come together, we come together very intentionally to help support the people in need," Mancebo added.
Officials say 37 people, including 11 children, have registered for emergency assistance through the Red Cross.
No one was seriously hurt in the fire, according to fire crews.
There was still no word on a cause of the fire as of Monday night.
