(04/04/06) JERSEY CITY ? Workers began the full-scale cleanup Tuesday of the contaminated Honeywell property in Hudson County.

The project follows an 11-year legal battle in which a group of ministers sued for the site?s proper cleanup. The area became contaminated with chromium after an old factory used the site as a dumping ground. The ministers sued when they noticed families in the area getting sick.

Honeywell, which currently owns the property, is responsible for the cleanup project. It will take approximately four years to remove all the chromium from the area. A representative from Honeywell says dirt from the site is being put on a train and taken to Idaho for decontamination.
