A new chapter of Asbury Park’s west side redevelopment got underway Tuesday with the demolition of old apartment units.
Crews began to tear down the old Boston Way complex near Memorial Drive and Springwood Avenue on Tuesday. The building had been vacant since 2014.
The new Boston Way calls for 105 affordable apartment units to occupy the same area.  The project comes with a $20 million price tag, and officials hope it will begin a new wave of redevelopment in the city's west side.
“I see this being a big step for the city as a whole. We’re happy to finally see some tangible progress. We just want to improve the quality of life for our residents, and this is a launching board for redeveloping a lot of our aging housing stock that we have and just keep it rolling,” Tom Sahlin, of the Asbury Park Housing Authority, said.
Officials said they to have the new apartments in Asbury Park open and ready for occupants within the next 12 to 18 months.
