The case of the missing Atlantic City mayor has been solved Tuesday just as succession plans were being readied.
Mayor Robert Levy had been missing for two weeks. His aides had only said he was hospitalized somewhere. Levy's attorney, however, revealed Tuesday that the mayor was treated and released from the Carrier Clinic in Belle Mead for undisclosed reasons, and had been at home for the past five days.
Levy is the target of a federal investigation. He had hired an attorney to defend him before he went missing. Authorities are reportedly looking into whether Levy collected $25,000 in undeserved military pension benefits. Levy, a Vietnam veteran, admitted earlier this year he lied about being a Green Beret.Discovery of the mayor's whereabouts comes just as a judge planned to hear a request to declare the office vacant. The City Council president was prepared to take over in the mayor's absence.
On Friday, a judge will hear arguments from Councilman Bruce Ward, who wants Levy?s seat vacated.
City Administrator Domenic Cappella is filling in as acting mayor while Levy recovers. Ward claims Cappella named himself for the spot without the proper appointment from the mayor. This issue will be analyzed by the judge at Friday?s hearing.
