The Jersey Shore is expected to be hit with a heavy thump of snow and then a mix of sleet and freezing rain during this Sunday’s storm.
Middletown Mayor Tony Perry says his town is ready for the storm. He says he has just enough road salt.
“We were able to purchase 500 tons of rock salt ahead of the storm,” he says. “We need it for all 375 miles worth of roadway we’ll be treating over the next few days.”
Perry says crews will work through Saturday to prepare for the Sunday morning storm.
The News 12 Storm Watch Team says southern parts of New Jersey will see snow – but icy conditions will be the real danger.
“Our crews are prepped. We're ready to respond,” says JCP&L spokesman Chris Hoenig.
Hoenig says the utility company prepped extra vehicles, staff and telephone poles in case they are needed.
“Ice accumulation adds weight to trees. Tree branches and power lines. That added weight adds strain and makes it easier for trees to come down during a storm,” he says.
The storm is expected to begin very early Sunday morning and could last into Monday morning. Gov. Mikie Sherrill has issued a state of emergency that will go into effect at 5 p.m. Saturday.
