A tree that once stood 60 feet tall in the backyard of a home on Wakefield Avenue in Metuchen is now stuck in the second-floor bedroom of that home.
Strong winds at 12 a.m. pushed the tree onto the house. It stopped just shy of hitting 11-year-old Eva Singh who was sleeping in the bedroom.
She woke up partially covered in roofing material and calling for help.
“I heard like a loud noise and I thought it was a dream. And then, like I started screaming. And I was like, 'Mom, where are you?'" said Singh.
A few minutes earlier, her father had walked downstairs after hearing strange noises outside.
“I looked out of this front window and I didn’t see anything, but then I went to the back side of the kitchen and I saw these two trees coming down. And then I heard my daughter scream," said Ajid Singh.
He went upstairs and found Eva partially covered in roofing material. He pulled her out and found her uninjured. His wife and younger son were in a second room unharmed.
The family returned today to the home on Tuesday to retrieve food and clothing from the house. They'll be staying in a hotel for the near future
The house will need substantial repairs before the family can return.
