Police have identified the driver in last month's hit-and-run in Wall Township that left a landscaper hurt, following an investigation highlighted by viral video.
Authorities say 91-year-old John Snyder of Brick was behind the wheel of the Subaru that struck the lawn mower and landscaper before speeding off.
When questioned, Snyder told police he thought he hit a garbage can. He now faces charges, including careless driving, reckless driving, failure to report an accident, leaving the scene of an accident with injuries and failure to maintain lanes.
Wall Township Police Chief Sean O'Halloran said the case is a reminder for families to have difficult conversations about driving safety with aging relatives. "Whether they believe that they can safely operate a motor vehicle and think about your loved ones if your loved one is riding a bike or walking or even driving another car, would you want somebody to possibly injure them," O'Halloran said.
Police say the victim has recovered and returned to work.
