"All I do is pay the mortgage, pay the mortgage to have a roof over my head. There are a lot of things that I couldn't do...it means a whole lot to me," said homeowner Clytie Morris.
The multi-family house is just the start. The organization recently received a major grant from the Federal Home Loan Bank of New York, as well as support from the Taub Foundation to help over 25 homeowners.
The majority of the work on Morris' house is being done on the second floor. Volunteers discarded belongings in order to make room for renovations. The organization says it's all about helping homeowners feel safer within their home and, in Morris' case, creating newer spaces for future tenants.
"It's really important that we can help homeowners./ now she is going to be able to get to rent her second floor, like she said she's looking for a good tenant," said Councilwoman Ruby Cotton.
Those with the organization say anyone living in Bergen and Passaic counties who needs assistance should reach out.
"We need more people to apply. We need more people to trust us with the process of getting their homes fixed. It's definitely more for repair, critical home repairs emergency situations. We do about 30 to 40 homes a year," said Melanie Arroyo with Rebuilding Together North Jersey.
