A weekend of violence in Trenton sparked renewed calls from the City Council for help from state police.

Late last week, the council passed a resolution asking the mayor to reach out for help. Trenton Mayor Douglas Palmer recently announced the city will hire 50 new police officers over the next two years. However, some council members say that?s too long to wait. They want to see extra officers on the streets now.

The council wants the mayor to expand the state police?s presence in the city. Though troopers already help on several task forces, council members want them on daily patrol, at least until the new officers are hired.

The mayor?s office says there needs to be more discussion on the issue and plans to have the police director speak with the council this month.

Meanwhile, police are still investigating the three shootings and two stabbings that occurred over the weekend.
