U.S. District Judge Esther Salas is speaking publicly for the first time since a shooting last month at her North Brunswick home killed her son and wounded her husband.
Judge Salas, 51, talked about her son's selfless act to shield his father.
“Daniel being Daniel, protected his father and he took the shooter's first bullet directly to the chest,” says Judge Salas. “The monster then turned his attention to my husband and began to shoot at my husband, one shot after another."

Daniel Mark Anderl, who had just turned 20, was killed. Salas was in another part of the house and was unharmed.
Judge Salas says her husband, Mark Anderl, 63, was shot three times. The man who shot them, Roy Den Hollander, 72, was found dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound the day after the attack in Sullivan County, New York.
Hollander described himself as an “anti-feminist” attorney who filed lawsuits challenging the constitutionality of “ladies’ night” promotions at bars and nightclubs, sued Columbia University for providing women’s studies classes, and sued news organizations over what he said was biased coverage.
Salas says her husband is still in the hospital, recovering from multiple surgeries.
