A Union County sheriff's officer is in critical condition following a police chase that took place Tuesday night.

Sheriff's Officer Chris Coon suffered a broken tibia, broken fibula and various head and facial injuries as a result of the pursuit.

Coon and his partner, James Guerrant, were pursuing a black Jeep Cherokee from Newark into Elizabeth. Police say the driver of the Jeep, 32-year-old Waleed Dozier of East Orange, was wanted for an armed robbery in Newark.

According to police, the Jeep was traveling east on South Broad Street in Elizabeth at about 100 to 125 miles per hour when it broadsided the unmarked Union County Sheriff's Office vehicle.

Dozier has been charged with multiple counts of alluding police and is being held on $500,000 bail. Police say two handguns and a shotgun were found in the Jeep.

Coon, the stepson of Union County Sheriff Ralph Froehlich, remains in critical condition at UMDNJ with various head, neck and leg injuries.

Guerrant was treated for minor injures at Trinitas Hospital and released Wednesday morning.
