Two people were found dead in their home of suspected carbon monoxide poisoning Saturday night.

They were discovered after Montvale Police and fire department officers conducted a welfare check at a house along 2 Lexington Lane at around 9:30 p.m.

Once inside the home, emergency personal detected high levels of gas and carbon monoxide.

First responders found the 84-year-old male and 83-year-old female unresponsive, and pronounced them dead at the scene.

The building was cleared shortly after.

A preliminary investigation by the Montvale Police and Bergen County Sheriff’s Department Bureau of Criminal Investigation showed the source of the carbon monoxide was from a running vehicle inside the garage.

Police say they do not suspect foul play and that the incident appears to be an accident.
