A Bergen County high school has a lot to celebrate Monday after watching two alumni win Super Bowl LIII.
It’s the first time that a set of twins won the Super Bowl – This is the third time Devin McCourty has won a Super Bowl ring. It was the first time for his twin brother Jason McCourty.
The McCourtys’ former high school coach Tony Karcich saw the game and texted them right away.
“Seeing you and your brother, with your mother and your children and it’s like ‘Oh my God. I coached these guys.’ It was awesome,” Karcich says.
Karcich coached the twins at Saint Joseph Regional High School in Montvale. The school proudly displays their jerseys. They even display some items from Devin McCourty’s previous Super Bowl wins.
Jason McCourty was striving for his first Super Bowl win before Sunday night. He made one of the game’s most important plays for the Patriots – breaking up a touchdown at the last second.

Karcich says that he imparted some advice to Jason McCourty before the playoffs.
“Devin’s been there and done that, so please listen to the advice your brother has,” Karcich says. “So they responded back. Jason was first with a big ‘LOL OK’ and then Devin said, “Tell him, coach. Tell him to listen to me.’”
After their father died, the McCourtys’ mother raised them. After St. Joseph’s they went played football at Rutgers University and then on to the NFL. They are known for their positive attitudes and leadership.
“They had those qualities before they met the high school coach, I have to say,” says Karcich. “I attributed it exclusively to their mother.”
And while Jason McCourty was chasing his brother for championship wins, Karcich says that when they were at Rutgers Jason was the one who was wanted for a scholarship. He says that he had to push Rutgers Coach Greg Schiano on Devin McCourty. He says his big push was that – They are twins!
