The eastbound lanes on the New Jersey Turnpike in Bayonne have reopened after the completion of emergency repairs.
The shutdown went into effect Wednesday afternoon in the area near Interchanges 14 and 14-A on the Newark Bay Hudson County extension.
In a Facebook post, the Bayonne Office of Emergency said that the eastbound Casciano Bridge closure involved a "critical structural issue" that was being addressed.
A spokesperson for the New Jersey Turnpike Authority told News 12 New Jersey that road bearings may have been affected by the recent cold temperatures, creating a gap between the bearings and the roadways.
Turnpike officials said that workers used 10 jacks to lift the span off the pier overnight to make the repairs.
The closures caused a heavy traffic buildup during the Wednesday evening commute
Traffic toward the Holland Tunnel was pushed through the Lincoln Tunnel and local Jersey City roads Thursday morning.
All repairs have been completed and the roadway is now open to traffic.
