The Turnpike Authority launched a campaign Sunday to increase road safety after a recent spike in deaths involving pedestrians on major roads.
Officials from the Turnpike Authority report four people killed since January after they left their disabled vehicles and began walking alongside major roadways. The new program has placed signs over roads and toll plazas urging drivers to remain inside their vehicles in the event of an accident or breakdown.
News 12 New Jersey interviewed many motorists who say their first instinct upon breaking down would be to exit their cars and check the engine or look for help. Officials say the safest way to address a problem is to call road safety hotlines, AAA or 911 for assistance.
On the New Jersey Turnpike, drivers can dial #95 and on the Garden State Parkway, drivers can call #GSP to speak directly with state police for help.
