Trenton is getting ready to test a new reverse 911 system that will send messages to cell phones and e-mail addresses.
Emergency messages are getting harder to send out by phone as people trade in land-lines for cell phones. A new system in Trenton now has the potential to reach everyone ? no matter how they communicate.
Like many reverse 911 systems, the Trenton system will send messages to every home and business phone. However, it will allow residents to sign up their cell phone numbers, PDA and e-mail addresses to receive messages as well.
The city can also pinpoint areas affected by an emergency so those who don?t need the calls won?t get them. City officials say they plan to use the system for events such as missing people, health hazards and flooding.
Mayor Doug Palmer says the city will not overuse the system. ?It?s not a toy. We?re not going to play around. When we call people, we want them to know it?s an important message,? said Palmer.
Every listed phone number in Trenton will get a recorded message March 31 at 4:30 p.m. about the new system. Residents who want their cell phone, PDA or e-mail address to receive the messages must sign up.
